The Fifth Step. Cert 15: some sexuality and nudity
The Widow Clicquot is an elegant and empowering historical drama that brings to life the remarkable true story of Barbe-Nicole Clicquot — the woman who revolutionised the champagne industry and built a global brand against overwhelming odds.
Set in early 19th-century France, the film begins with the sudden death of Barbe-Nicole’s husband, leaving her widowed at just 27. In a society where women are expected to retreat from public and commercial life, she instead makes the radical decision to take control of the family’s failing wine business. Facing scepticism, legal obstacles, and fierce competition, she must rely on her intelligence, resilience, and unshakeable belief in her vision.
Against the backdrop of political upheaval and economic uncertainty during the Napoleonic wars, Barbe-Nicole pioneers bold new methods in champagne production, transforming both the quality of the wine and the fortunes of her house. At the same time, the film explores her private world — her grief, her memories of love, and the personal cost of ambition.
Beautifully filmed and richly detailed, The Widow Clicquot is as much a character study as it is a period drama. It celebrates female determination, innovation, and independence, offering a compelling portrait of a woman who refused to accept the limits placed upon her — and in doing so, left a legacy that still sparkles today.
As usual, bar, mulled wine, ice creams, teas and coffees at the start and at the interval.
See you there.
