I Swear is a deeply affecting biographical drama about John Davidson, the Scottish man whose lifelong experience with Tourette syndrome transformed him from a misunderstood teenager into a passionate and influential campaigner. Directed and written by Kirk Jones, the film unfolds against the backdrop of 1980s Scotland — a time when Tourette syndrome was poorly recognised, often mischaracterised and subjected to stigma.
As a youth, John’s sudden onset of tics alienates him from peers and confounds those around him. His condition leads to painful misunderstandings at school and within his own family, confronting him with isolation and prejudice. Yet through chance friendships and moments of human kindness, he begins to find footholds of acceptance and self-worth.
Robert Aramayo gives a strikingly humane performance as the adult Davidson, portraying both the humour and hardship of life with Tourette’s. Supported by heartfelt turns from Maxine Peake, Shirley Henderson and Peter Mullan, the film balances laugh-out-loud moments with profound emotional truth.
As the story progresses, John turns his experience into advocacy — hosting support workshops, educating schools and police, and ultimately receiving an MBE for his tireless work raising awareness. In doing so, the film reframes life with Tourette’s not as a condition to be overcome, but as a part of identity that enriched his empathy, resilience and mission.
Warm, funny and courageous, I Swear offers a fresh and compassionate look at neurodiversity, reminding audiences that understanding begins with listening.
As usual, bar, mulled wine, ice creams, teas and coffees at the start and at the interval.
See you there.
